Your Heart
Have you ever heard the phrase, “Listen to your heart?” Many of us have. It’s a passionate response to an emotional situation. I also often hear in movies, “Follow your heart.” More than likely, most of us have felt that pull to follow our heart. These are common phrases, but they’re both bad counsel. This is because, “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure.” (Jeremiah 17:9) Our hearts entertain many feelings and not necessarily all of them are true. Therefore we should never be led by our heart. Our hearts have a powerful way of overriding the will of God for our lives. Let Jesus lead you. Follow Him and not your heart.
Solomon, the wisest man that every lived knew the dangers of the deceitful heart. He tested it to the extreme by refusing his heart no pleasure. He listened to his heart. He followed it away from God. Which lead him to say that everything was meaningless and he hated life. His heart led him into hopelessness.
When I’m led by God my heart is beautifully loving my husband and children. But if my heart leads I may be led by lies. We can protect our hearts from deceit by making sure they line up with the word of God. “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” (Proverbs 4:23) The good and the bad alike come from our hearts. So unless you know your heart is aligned with God’s perfect and pleasing will - do not listen to or follow your heart!
