Fully Devoted

I have a newspaper subscription that keeps me up to date on national and world news. But keeping up takes a lot of time. The newspaper (maybe for you it’s a phone, tablet or laptop) will always have news that is immediate and current, but that doesn’t mean that it’s important. On the contrary, what’s actually important may very well be considered outdated to some. It’s the ancient and living Bible. The first book ever published. The word Bible in Greek actually means book. This first and most important book is good for eternity. It contains not just important news for today, but for forever. The current news we encounter is temporary. So, if you want a more abundant life, and you should, then it’s worth it to turn away from what’s unimportant to read what really matters. This is going to require you to be fully devoted.

Jesus Christ, our perfect example, was fully devoted to the eternal while walking on earth. Try to imagine how many people would have wanted Him to become involved in the politics of Rome at that time. To the entire known world Rome was immediate and current. To them it would have been unimaginable to believe that the mighty Rome would one day cease it’s status as a world power. Jesus who fully knows all things was focused on what was important. He wasted no time on what is temporary.

Let’s be honest with ourselves and admit it’s often more fun to be entertained than to study the Bible. “But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.” (2 Corinthians 11:3) Listen, this is going to be really difficult, but it’s time to stop picking up our devices and to pick up the word of God. Let’s make the choice and do the right thing. In this we will find the satisfaction we truly crave. Not short term amusement, but actual fulfillment. Only found in God. Only found through being fully devoted.
