Thirsty

Have you ever met someone who is never satisfied? They obtain one item from the world only to immediately need something new. Their fulfillment seems unquenchable. The truth is - it is. What they thirst for will never be satisfied by anything in this world.

The lyrics, “As the deer panteth for the water, so my soul longth after you,” have stuck with me for years. I recently found these words in Psalm 42. They give us a picture through nature of what it’s like to thirst for God. Of what our souls truly long for. Jesus said, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.” (John 7:37)

Jesus came to a town and asked a woman for a drink of water. She was part of an outcast race. She even said, “How can you ask me for a drink?” (John 4:9) Jesus reassured her before He got to what mattered - her heart. He accurately described her love life. “The fact is you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband.” (John 4:18) Sound unquenchable? One husband to the next. Her soul was longing. Jesus graciously told her He had what she needed. That by drinking the world’s water she would remain thirsty. But by drinking the water He could give her she would “never thirst.” (John 4:14)

Through Jesus we are satisfied. We have the living unending spring of water welling up within us. Which is why we can sing the rest of the songs lyrics; “You alone are my hearts desire and I long to worship you.”
