Near Him

Yesterday my boys were singing a couple theme songs from a classic 80’s movie we had all just watched. I even joined in a couple times. Toward evening they were still bursting out an occasional lyric and my husband finally yelled out, “Enough!” They both laughed, because they knew that it truly was enough. Do you ever get a song stuck in your head? Music is powerful. Which is why we have to be careful what music we listen to. The lyrics may play over and over in our mind. Music should be selected wisely. If we sing songs that are meant to worship God then music is being used as a good influence. It will draw you near Him.

Paul and Silas knew the importance of singing to God. While traveling in the Roman colony Philippi they experienced a clash with it’s culture. They aggravated the people which resulted in them being stripped, beaten with rods and ordered to jail. With their feet fastened in the stocks they were praying and singing to God. The other prisons were listing to them when suddenly a violent earthquake shook the foundation of the jail. Everyone’s chains came loose.

Could you do what Paul and Silas did? Despite their bad circumstances they recalled God’s goodness and started singing to Him. Or would you be inclined to sorrow and self-pity? They had wounds, pain and an uncertain future. Yet they turned their eyes to Jesus. He can loosen our chains. So, I tell you to pray and sing. Let good words play over and over in your mind. Let them draw you near Him.
