God is Love
The world’s consensus today is that we all need more love. It’s everywhere. Advertisements. Corporations. Activists. Who could argue with it? Jesus, Himself did sum up all ten commandments into just two and they were both about love. Loving God and loving others. We definitely need to love more. But I’m quite certain that “love more” is being used by some today as accept more. Or as a license for disobeying God’s commands. You see, love can’t be used to compromise living blamelessly. This is because “God is love.” (1 John 4:8).
It’s who He is. Sacrificial. Pure. Holy. God showed it to us when He sent His son to earth. Jesus showed it to us when he obediently went to the cross. This love is hard to define. Which has many making their own interpretations. My husband likes to correct me if I use it carelessly. “Do you really love that shirt?” Nope. “I like this shirt.” He is right. But our language is limited. We use this word for everything. For family affections, romance, sex, our things, our neighbors and even how to treat our enemies. But it’s not the same. The English definition mixes it up. Which has made it extremely hard for us to reconcile what love really is. Especially when our culture attempts to add lust to the list. It’s not even close. Those who have experienced the tender love of God know it. Thankfully the bible does make it clear. It says, “This is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands.” (2 John 1:6)
If we love God we obey Him. Which means we will be loving others as well. Because walking in God is walking in love. Real love.
