Followers
My husband said he heard someone on the radio talking about the censorship in America. The man said in desperation, “Who will I follow?” That really is the perfect question, isn’t it? Who will we follow? To me, it’s obvious who to follow - Jesus Christ. He is, “The way and the truth and the life.” (John 14:6) Extending an invitation, Jesus said, “Come, follow me.” (Matthew 4:19) This is exactly what a Christian is - a Christ follower. The social media terminology serves as a reminder that God made us all to follow. Who are you following?
Of course following God isn’t as easy as following someone online. There is a cost. When Simon-Peter decided to follow Jesus he pulled his boat to shore, “Left everything and followed him.” (Luke 5:11) When Levi, the tax collector, decided to follow Jesus he also, “Left everything and followed him.” (Luke 5:28) What each of these men left is different. What you and I leave may also be different. Jesus said, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” (Luke 9:23) Oh no, denying ourselves is something we don’t do well. Either is submission. But we can’t follow God and the world at the same time. Jesus said, “What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?” (Luke 9:25) He is telling us that it’s definitely worth the cost.
His way is good. You can trust Him. Like the unnamed man in Luke 9:57, we too can tell the Lord, “I will follow you wherever you go.” Then never turn back. Or even look back. Following His plan for your life. We got kingdom work to do!
