Envy
It’s still winter, but a few days with the bright sun had me thinking about spring. Fall and winter have always been my favorite. But as I see the outdoor furniture start to appear in stores I feel excited about sitting out on my porch. I like the thought of a blanket, good book and spring showers. I did find a chair set that I liked. However, the marketing is lacking. The product description says, “With such a stunning furniture set, you’ll surely be the envy of the neighborhood.” Hmm, they don’t know their target market well, because I would never want anyone to deal with envy. It’s one of the worst conditions we can be under. Like a parasite it eats away at us. I’ve felt it and it’s horrible. It’s also a sin. So, let me encourage you, if you have any envy you can be released from it.
Leah and Rachel should have been the closest of friends, they were sisters. Yet, their sad story as told in the bible is centered around envy. They both wanted what the other had. And ended up allowing a competitive spirit to take hold. Rachel literally said in Genesis 30:8, “I have won” when she received a good gift from the Lord. Not, “I’m blessed” or “Thank you Lord.” Nope, only I’m better than you. She was focused on her sister instead of the good things that she had. Envy will rob you from enjoying your life.
One sister, Leah, finally did surrender. When God blessed her she said, “This time I will praise the Lord.” (Genesis 29:35) I can just feel her realizing where her focus should have been. She was now thankful. It’s so beautiful. Like Leah, we need to acknowledge the good gifts that God has given us. But to truly be released we will also need to sincerely thank God for the good gift he has given to the one we envy. And pray for His help to love them. I know it’s hard to think about praying for someone who has something you want. But, oh, to be released! It’s worth it. You can actually be free. Praise the Lord!
