Hungry
There is so much distraction in our culture right now. It’s hard to hear through the continuous onslaught and chaos surrounding us. However, if we can quiet our minds we will be able to lead our hungry souls to Jesus.
When Moses led the Israelites in the wilderness they were hungry. They called out to God for food and He answered their prayer. He provided daily bread called Manna from heaven. They ate the bread and had their fill. Many years later, Jesus said, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever.” (John 6:51) Jesus, like the Manna, was a gift from heaven. However, Jesus gives eternal life and the other bread just spoils. Jesus continued, “This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” Foretelling the power of the cross for our sins. But when the Jews heard this their grumbling turned to arguing. They didn’t appreciate Him referring to His flesh as bread. That didn’t stop Jesus. He took it further. He said, “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.” (John 6:54) Whoa! Too far? “On hearing it, many of His disciples said, ‘This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?’” (John 6:60) Even His own disciples had a hard time hearing His words. He explained that they were full of the Spirit and life. They were also used to expose those who didn’t believe. Which was evident because, “Many of His disciples turned back and no longer followed Him.” (John 6:66)
Today, many of us are eating up what is around us in the culture. Uncontrollably consuming politics, entertainment and social distractions. We must stop! We need to be feasting on Jesus. Eating the living bread from heaven.
Jesus asked the twelve disciples that remained with Him, “You do not want to leave too, do you?” (John 6:67) Simon Peter’s answer is my answer and hopefully yours too; “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.” (John 6:68-69)
