Higher

Did you make any resolutions for the start of the calendar year? For most people I guess it may have been to lose 10 pounds. That’s a good idea but maybe we should go higher. It seems like we all spend too much time focused on things that one day won’t matter. Paul said to the Philippi church, “For they all seek their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 2:21) I’m writing this to encourage you and I to ask God to take us higher. Higher in our thoughts and ways. God declares, “My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9) May God help us have his interest in mind and take us higher.

Daniel set his mind to gain understanding and to serve God. “Daniel resolved not to defile himself.” (Daniel 1:8) He did forego choice foods and wine for vegetables and water, not to lose weight, but for a much higher purpose. He wanted to keep clean and pure before God. To have wisdom, knowledge and discernment. It was God himself who gave Daniel knowledge and understanding of all kinds. He had the ability to understand visions and dreams. Speaking to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon he said, “There is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries.” (Daniel 2:28) Daniel made it clear that it was not him, a mere man, but God who takes our thoughts and ways higher.

Like Daniel we need to surrender our will. Daniel prayed, fasted, honored, praised and thanked the One True God. His interest was not on himself, but on Him. He knew wisdom and power come only from God. As we seek Jesus, I hope He will bring our ways and thoughts much higher.
