Fear God
My boys are on summer vacation! We are enjoying the sunshine and family nights. We’re trying out classic movies. It always amazes me how these movies are sure to leave God completely out of the story, but do not skip misusing His name. They repeatedly say, “Oh, my God” or “Jesus” in exclamation. It’s obvious that movie companies don’t fear God. Yet, they do know His name is powerful and therefore use it. If you read my blog at all you would know I encourage faith over fear. But fearing God is an entirely different thing. It’s not being afraid. It’s respect. We are to fear God.
Not misusing God’s name is one of the ten commandments. God will, “Not hold anyone guiltless who misuses His name.” (Exodus 20:7) The ten were given to Moses on Mount Sinai, while the people stood below. Moses told them, “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you and keep you from sinning.” (Exodus 20:20) The test was simple. Stand back from the mountain and don’t come up it. God was making it clear that He is set apart and holy. His presence was known. Thunder, lightening, thick clouds and loud trumpet blasts. The Lord descended on the mountain in fire. Smoke billowed. The mountain trembled violently. The people also trembled in fear and they stayed their distance. They seen the power of God.
Two criminals were crucified at the same time as Jesus. “One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at Him.” (Luke 23:39) Mocking His authority as God. The second criminal rebuked the first saying, “Don’t you fear God?” (Luke 23:40) He understood what they really deserved. That their punishment was just. He feared God. So Jesus rich in mercy told him, “Today you will be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:43)
We are to respect God’s holy name, power and authority. Ask yourself today; “Do I fear God?”
